In the early 1990’s an idea came to fruition which was to establish a ‘Craft Group’ which was very warmly received by all in the parish.
Initially learning of new crafts and techniques took place such as paper marbling and stenciling which were promoted along with knitting and sewing, principally for garments for babies and young children.
The group meets each Tuesday afternoon from 1.30pm until 3pm. It’s mainly a fellowship group who like to knit, crochet and chat these days but we have external interests which we support.
With the fall of Afghanistan in 2021, the group decided to provide new and used clothing and household items to Afghani refugees who had arrived in Australia. This still continues via the North Balwyn Rotary Club. The group has provided small kitchen items purchase from membership funds raised each week.
Another voluntary outreach program is the School of St Jude’s in Tanzania. We have supported the school for many years and have had regular visits from its founder Gemma Sisia along with several alumni who keep the group informed about its progress and the wonderful achievements of the students. It has been an inspiring journey to follow. A visit by Gemma Sisia 2025

We seek to provide support to any of our members who feel they need it. This may be driving to appointments, providing meals or just an ear to hear and a shoulder to lean on. The group has certainly evolved into more of a friendship and craft group. Our emphasis is on the friendship and fellowship and less on the ability to craft. In this way everyone is welcome.
Our hospitality is well received each week by our members who take it in turns to provide the afternoon tea. We enjoy a mid-winter feast at a local restaurant and for the past couple of years our December Christmas celebrations have been an onsite, sumptuous, catered affair.
Our membership has been very steady and we all look forward to Tuesdays at 1.30pm. Please do not hesitate to reach out for more information via our parish office (0478 404 179 or [email protected]). We’d love to have a chat.
