St Dunstan’s and Camcare have an extended history with Camcare the recipient of monetary and grocery donations from the church. This relationship was extended via a shared valuing of generosity and a love of gardening.
In November 2024 we signed an MOU that stated, The vegetable garden will been created and maintained to produce fresh food for local community members who have be formally assessed as needing it’ and this is what has happened since the start of 2025.
David Beveridge, a St Dunstan’s parishioner, had managed the community garden located at the north end of the tennis courts, and he continues to be an active and valued member of the Kitchen Garden Team The team, led by Barbara Ormeod, works across the two current sites. We count ourselves lucky at Camcare to have the fortune to be able to increase our productivity whilst building friendships and a shared knowledge bank along the way. In the past year Camcare has put in a watering system for the garden beds and created more growing spaces. A garden shed and a place to rest after digging are the next projects.

The fresh produce from the St Dunstan’s and Camcare Camberwell sites is distributed during our Thursday morning Fresh Food program. The additional cultivated land has doubled the food volume and broadened our range of food plants grown. Later this year we will be starting a third garden which will focus more on direct community access to food than harvesting for the Thursday Fresh Food program. It will be at our Y Street Ashburton site.
We are always looking for volunteers to join our team of enthusiastic, knowledgeable and energetic gardeners.
