St Dunstan’s has long had a ministry to older folk, visiting by the Vicar and parishioners at home, in Aged Care homes or hospital.
The Vicar, Fr Jobby, every month except January, celebrates a service at each of four Aged Care homes:
Benetas Broughton Hall Aged Care Home
Camberwell Gables Care Community
Menarock Life Camberwell Gardens Aged Care
Lynden Aged Care
Regularly the parish hosts residents from a local Aged Care home to morning tea and a communion service. This long standing ministry enables parishioners to mingle and socialise with the elderly residents and is appreciated by both. Two or three hymns are sung, a short sermon given by the celebrant, and a short version of the service followed. The staff from the Home participate. A second Aged Care home has recently joined the group.
The third ministry is informal; parishioners ministry to each other, for example where a parishioner cares for another who may be confined to home.
Aged Care ministry is seen as a gospel imperative, in one parable where Jesus talks about feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming strangers, clothing the naked, and visiting the sick and imprisoned.
